Plain Eminems

11/10/2002

Some critics have suggested that Eminem’s new movie “8 Mile” is a public relations ploy to get him into the public’s good graces. It seems to me though; he has been doing just fine without the public’s approval.

I am sure there is some truth that he wanted to help his public image but whether you like him or hate him, you cannot deny his talent. To truly have a unique sound in the music industry now a days, you have to have raw talent.

Parents seem to have forgotten that when they listened to Elvis that they were rebelling against their parents and society. Look how perfectly those Baby Boomers have turned out now! These same parents underestimate the intelligence of their own children. They seem to believe that their children are thoughtless idiots incapable of determining what is real from what is entertainment.

Society has changed since the days of Elvis and it will continue to do so. Those that choose to use Eminem, Marilyn Manson, or any other artist as a scapegoat are afraid of the truth. It is up to individual parents to prohibit their children from listening to any music that they deem inappropriate.

VH1 aired a Behind the Music special featuring Eminem in which gay and lesbian activists were complaining about the hate mail they received from his fans. Who demonstrated hate first, the morons that wrote hate mail or the gay and lesbian advocates that protested his concerts? They want the freedom to be sexually open, but they want to censor the rights of others for their own benefits. Freedom works both ways. Please do not try to argue that this type of music “breeds hate” because I know plenty of people that like Eminem and are not anti-gay. Saying that his fans are anti this or racist that holds no water. Are some of his fans homophobic… probably, but classifying them all as such is no better than saying all gay men talk with a lisp.

Are people unable to separate entertainment from reality? When you go to the movies you know it is a Hollywood fabrication, but isn’t a CD the same? Do people believe that musicians like Eminem created words like kill, rape, or adultery? Take a minute to read the Bible, you will find all of these words and more!

Those who seek to discredit Eminem or his music should stop censoring my right to listen to what I want to. You worry about you and I will decide for myself. If you do not like him, do not buy his music or change the radio station.

Why? Just Because!
