Let It Snow
12/23/2002
Why do meteorologists need to have an education? All of those years of schooling and all they do is guess anyway! Can you think of any other profession that has such a low expectation of accuracy?
I understand that there are countless variables that influence weather, but why make predictions five days in advance when they cannot tell me for sure what the next day will bring. I do not want to underestimate the importance of hurricane or severe storm tracking because it no doubt helps to save lives, but when it comes to everyday weather you might as well ask the Magic 8 Ball.
Every time a weatherman mentions “snow” it seems to create mass hysteria. I remember several instances when schools either canceled classes for the day or closed early just because there was suppose to be a large accumulation of snow, which turned out to be rain. It is generally a good idea to err on the conservative side, but it amazed me that people are paid to guess at the weather.
If I went on a job interview and told them they could expect me to be correct a little more than fifty percent, do you think I would get the job? I can watch three news channels and their forecasts are likely to be as different as the people making them. Where is the science in that?
My prediction for May 1, 2020:
High around 80º with between 4 and 6 inches of accumulating snow so plan accordingly!
Why? Because I said so!
