Waggley Tail

This past Thanksgiving morning I noticed a puppy walking around our front yard without any collar or identification. We took the puppy in, gave her a warm bath, and fed her all while preparing for our holiday guests.
We put up signs all over the neighborhood, contacted the local newspapers, and called the area pound and shelters giving the owner the benefit of the doubt even though we had a suspicion that she was dumped on our dead end. None of the area no-kill shelters accept stray animals because of the potential diseases they may be carrying and we did not want to be responsible for bringing her to the pound so we began to shift our focus to finding her a new home. The local veterinarian told us that she was approximately a four-month-old Dachshund/Vizla mix.
Had my wife and I not just adopted a puppy from a shelter a few months before we probably would have adopted her ourselves. Having two dogs already (one of which was a stray) was all we could handle. We are still fostering the puppy with a potential new home lined up in Massachusetts.
How far gone from society do you have to be to dump a puppy in the woods? Had the owner contacted the shelter they would have been able find her a new home. Since we cannot speculate the origin of the dog that is no longer an option. If you do not want puppies, or kittens for that matter, follow Bob Barkers advice and have your pets spayed or neutered. I would love to know what goes through someone’s mind when they abandon a helpless puppy in the woods. The snow covered ground, freezing temperatures, and sparse food would have surely killed the puppy in a matter of days. I would like to give the person who dumped her a piece of my mind and my boot!
Why? Just Because
